Sr. Leona Castle, OP + (October 1918 - December 2011)

Sister Leona Castle, O.P., entered eternal life on December 8, 2011. Sister was born on October 11, 1918, to the late Aubrey and Anna Alloway Castle in Port Arthur, TX. She was preceded in death by her sister, Sister Maximus, O.P., and by her brother Max. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Mitzie; nieces and nephews, Mimi Monks (Billy), David (Judy), Rev. Nathan, O.P., Mike (Kathy); Cathryn Whitman (Marcus); and 9 great nieces and nephews.

Sister Leona joined the Houston Dominican Sisters on June 27, 1935, after graduation from St. Anthony High School in Beaumont. Her ministry in education spanned 63 years of administration and teaching. In Houston she served at Sacred Heart, St. Peter, All Saints, St. Christopher, St. Augustine, St. Catherine Montessori, and Corpus Christi; in Orange she was principal of St. Mary; in Port Neches she taught at St. Elizabeth; in California she ministered at St. Francis de Sales in Riverside and St. Mary and St. Gregory in Whittier; and in Austin she and Sr. Benita founded Dominican Academy where they served for 17 years.

Sister's years at St. Dominic Villa were spent graciously serving the retired sisters as she brought Communion to the sick, decorated for feast days and holidays, composed packets of greetings for birthday/feast day celebrants, and served snacks daily from her cart.
