World Day Against the Death Penalty
September 25, 2012
October 10, 2012
The Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (TCADP) and several other organizations will join with abolitionists around the world to celebrate World Day Against the Death Penalty on October 10 of this year.   A press conference and vigil will be held in front of the Harris County Courthouse starting at 11am.  Exonerated death row prisoner Anthony Graves and murder victim family member Dr. Linda White will speak at the press conference.
The U.S. is the only western, industrialized nation to execute prisoners.    Texas leads the nation with  484 executions as of Sept. 20, 2012.  The state has executed seven people in 2012 and currently has eight more executions scheduled through the end of the year, including Jonathan Green who is scheduled on October 10.    Harris County has had 116 executions, more than any other county or state in the USA.
Dave Atwood of the TCADP states,  "Death sentences and executions in Texas have dropped dramatically in recent years.  We hope that this trend will continue and our state will join the rest of the civilized world in totally rejecting this barbaric form of punishment.  The death penalty does not bring healing to the victims of crime, nor  does it deter others from committing murder.  It costs more to carry out than a long prison sentence.  Furthermore,  innocent people have been sentenced to death.   We do not need the death penalty to protect society."
