In the 1960's the Galveston-Houston Diocese chose Guatemala in response to the Pope's request to send sisters, brothers and priests to form leaders among the indigenous people in Central America.
The year 1966 marks the date of the Houston Dominican inception of ministry in Guatemala. Four sisters began staffing one of the parochial schools in the hills of Zacapa. In addition, they also taught catechism in the public schools. Following 4 years of skillful leadership of the sisters, the indigenous people were prepared to assume responsibility for the school and the catechetical instructions.
1970 found the sisters working with the poor in Guatemala City. Now in their fourth decade, the sisters continue to preach and teach human dignity and Christian values through an integrated educational program giving unequaled opportunities to the most needy children (ages 2-1/2 to 15 years). Their work at San Vicente de Paul School prepares the children to be future leaders who will build a society of justice, love and peace.
In addition to their accomplished work at San Vicente de Paul, the Houston Dominicans are further involved in education by contributing to the Catholic Schools program and the development of pre-school programs for the country.
